When people think “EV charger install,” they picture a sleek wall unit. But there’s a second option, and the difference between them is roughly $500, because a wall charger is a piece of hardware you buy, while an EV outlet uses the mobile connector that already came with your car. For some drivers the cheaper path is the smarter one.
A hardwired wall charger (Tesla Wall Connector, Emporia, ChargePoint and similar) mounts on the wall, wires directly to a dedicated circuit, and gives you the fastest home charging with smart features like scheduling and load management. The unit itself typically runs $400 to $650.
A 240-volt EV outlet is a heavy-duty receptacle on a dedicated circuit. You plug in the mobile connector that came with your car. Slightly slower charging in some setups, fewer features, and no charger hardware to buy.
A Milford homeowner asked us for EV charging but didn’t want a wall-mounted charger. We ran a GFCI-protected EV outlet on a dedicated circuit instead (GFCI protection is required by current code for these receptacles, which is a detail some installers skip). He charges off his mobile connector every night and never misses the wall unit.
The outlet makes sense if you drive average miles, park overnight every night, and want the lowest cost of entry. The wall charger earns its price if you want the fastest charge, share the car or the garage, want charging schedules and energy tracking, or plan to add a second EV later. Either way the circuit is the real work, and it’s sized so you can upgrade from outlet to wall charger later without rewiring.
