A hot tub is one of the few purchases where the electrical work is as involved as the product. Here’s what a proper installation includes, so you can sanity-check any quote.
Most full-size hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, commonly 50 amps, run from your panel. Code requires GFCI protection for the circuit and a disconnect within sight of the tub but at least five feet away, so it can be shut off in an emergency without reaching past the water. Wire type and burial depth matter for the run across the yard, and bonding requirements around the tub are specific. This is one of the most code-detailed jobs in residential electrical, which is exactly why it’s permitted and inspected.
Where’s your panel, and where’s the tub? A tub near the panel with a clean run costs meaningfully less than one across the yard requiring trenching. The second question: does your panel have the capacity? A 50-amp circuit is a big add, and on older 100-amp services it can be the thing that finally forces the panel conversation.
