You’ve got a dead outlet. You went to the panel, and every breaker is sitting exactly where it should be. Nothing tripped. So what gives? This is one of the most common calls we get at Ground Zero Electric, and the answer is usually one of four things.
GFCI outlets, the ones with the TEST and RESET buttons, are where we look first. Sometimes one has simply tripped. Sometimes it has failed outright, and surges are a common killer. We had a service call where a customer had dead outlets in the garage and in an upstairs room. Two different floors, seemingly unrelated. Each area turned out to have its own GFCI, and both had been fried during a lightning storm. We replaced them, tested everything, and the whole house was live again the same visit.
Try this first: find every GFCI in the house (kitchen, bathrooms, garage, basement, outside) and press RESET firmly on each. A surprising number of dead outlet calls end right there, and if you call us first we’ll tell you to try it before anyone drives out.
Two common versions of this. Outlets wired with quick “back-stab” connections, common in production-built homes, can loosen over decades of heat cycling. And in homes with aluminum wiring, connections made to outlets that aren’t rated for aluminum loosen as the aluminum expands and contracts. Either way, when the connection lets go, that outlet dies and often every outlet after it on the circuit dies too. The breaker never trips because nothing shorted; the path just broke. This one is not a DIY fix. A connection that has been arcing is a fire risk, and aluminum wiring needs the right rated devices and treatment, not a standard outlet swap.
In many homes, one half of certain outlets is controlled by a wall switch. It’s how builders handled lamp lighting. If half the outlet is dead, check nearby switches before anything else.
Sometimes the breaker itself has failed internally, or the connection at the breaker has loosened. It looks fine, but it isn’t delivering. On a recent Hyde Park commercial job, a circuit problem traced back to a breaker that had simply gone bad with age. It happens, especially in panels past their prime.
If resetting GFCIs doesn’t bring it back, stop there.
