A Lightning Storm Fried My GFCI Outlets. What Happened, and How to Stop It Next Time

Surge Protection · 5 min read · August 24, 2026

After a good Ohio storm rolls through, our phone does a predictable thing: “half my outlets are dead,” “my GFCIs won’t reset,” “the microwave and the garage door opener both died.”

Here’s a real one from Liberty Township: a lightning storm came through and fried three GFCI outlets in one night. Each one was its own casualty. We replaced all three, and then had the conversation this post is about.

Why storms kill GFCIs first

A surge, from lightning nearby or the grid switching hard as the utility reroutes power, shoves a spike of voltage through your wiring. GFCI outlets contain sensitive electronics to do their safety job, which makes them the canary in the coal mine. They’re often the first casualties, same as your garage door opener, microwave, and anything else with a circuit board.

Replacing fried GFCIs fixes today. It does nothing about the next storm.

The fix is one device at the panel

A whole-home surge protector (SPD) installs at your electrical panel and clamps surges before they reach your outlets. One device protects everything downstream: the GFCIs, the appliances, the TVs, the router, the furnace board. Power strips help at a single outlet; the panel-mounted SPD is the actual defense.

That’s what we installed at that Liberty Township home while we were already there replacing the GFCIs. The honest version of that service call isn’t “we fixed it.” It’s “here’s how you stop paying for this every storm season.”

When to add one

Any time is fine, but the cheapest moment is during other panel work. When we replaced a Sharonville customer’s full 200-amp service, adding the SPD during the job cost a fraction of a separate visit. If a panel upgrade is anywhere in your future, bundle it.

Storm season in Ohio peaks in spring, and so does the damage. If your house has eaten a surge before, or you’re tired of resetting and replacing, call or text (513) 866-8685 and we’ll quote it flat.
